GLYCERlN
   A dense fluid remarkable for its strong aflinity for moisture. It is hence of great use as a local depletant, especially to mucous membranes. It is thus applied to the cervix uteri to relieve conges tion and on a similar principle is used in the form of suppositories to cause the bowels to move. In diabetes mellitus, it is sometimes used in place of sugar as a sweetening agent in articles of food.1
