Physician's Materia Medica on Sarsaparilla

AMERICAN SARSAPARILLA
   The root of ARALIA NUDICAULIs, Lin. Aromatic, alterative, in hot infusion diaphoretic.1

BAMBOO BRlER
   The-root of SMILAX PSEUDO-CHINA, Lin. Has the properties of the ofdcial Sarsaparilla. i. e. tonic and alterative.1

BAMBOO BRIER COMPOUND
   A combination of vegetable alteratives widely used in the treat ment of syphilitic affections, and havim; the high endorsement of Dr. J. Marion Sims. It consists of; Smilax Sarsaparilla, 4 parts; Stil lingia sylvatica, 4 parts; Lappa minor, 4 parts; Phytolacca decandra, 4 parts; Xanthoxylum Carolinianum, 1 part.1

BURDOCK (Lappa)ARCTI
   The root. also the seeds of ARCTIUM LAPPA. Lin. Tonic. altera tive, aperient, diuretic. Used like Sarsaparilla in cutaneous, stru mous and syphilitic affections.1

SARSAPARILLASMAR
   The root of SMILAX OFFICINALIS, Kunth. SMILAX MEDICA. Schlecht. and other species of SMILAX. Alterative; prescribed in con stitutional diseases such as syphilis, usually in conjunction with potassium iodide and other alteratives.1

YELLOW PARILLA (Menispermum)
   The rhizome and roots of MENISPERMUM CANADENSIS, Lin. Tonic. alterative. laxative, diuretic. Used in the same manner as Sarsaparilla, q. v.1
