kidney failure
definition of kidney failure
1. loss of kidney function. When kidney failure is caused by an acute (sudden and short-term) condition, such as a traumatic injury or poisoning, the kidneys may be able to recover. Usually, however, kidney failure is caused by chronic (long-term) conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Chronic diseases permanently damage kidney tissue; treatments include dialysis and kidney transplantation.1
