definition of organic food
1. food made from plants or animals that have been grown or raised according to the standards of the National Organic Program. The standards relate to the methods, practices, and substances used to produce and process agricultural products. Use of genetic engineering, ionizing radiation, and sewage sludge is prohibited. Cereals, fruits, and vegetables must be grown using natural fertilizers and natural pest control methods. Animals raised for meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products must be fed organic feed and not given antibiotics or hormones to promote growth.
