AMERICAN SARSAPARILLA

AMMONIUM CARBONATE
   An active cardiac and general stimulant; antacid. Valuable in adynamic fevers, in capillary bronchitis and in some forms of dyspep sia. Dose, as expectorant, 0.13 to 0.20 Grm. (2 to 3 grs.); as stimulant 0.3 to0.6 Grm. (5 to 10 grs.), repeated every hour.⁴

ANISE^MYOD
   The fruit of PIMPINELLA Amsmvr, Lin. Stimulant, aromatic, anodyne, carminative, reputed galactagogue. Especially useful in infantile colic and as a remedy for nausea.⁴

ATROPINE
   Alkaloid obtained from Belladonna and other Solanaceous plants. Powerfully mydriatic, anodyne, antispasmodic, deliriant; stimulates respiratory center, suppresses secretions of skin and mucous mem brane; antagonistic to morphine. See Belladonna. Dose, 0.0003 to 9.0013 Grm. (1-200 to 1-50 gr.).⁴

BAMBOO BRlER
   The-root of SMILAX PSEUDO-CHINA, Lin. Has the properties of the ofdcial Sarsaparilla. i. e. tonic and alterative.⁴

BAMBOO BRIER COMPOUND
   A combination of vegetable alteratives widely used in the treat ment of syphilitic affections, and havim; the high endorsement of Dr. J. Marion Sims. It consists of; Smilax Sarsaparilla, 4 parts; Stil lingia sylvatica, 4 parts; Lappa minor, 4 parts; Phytolacca decandra, 4 parts; Xanthoxylum Carolinianum, 1 part.⁴

BELLADONNA^ATROP
   The leaves, also the root of ATROPA BELLADONNA, Lin. My driatic, a deliriant narcotic, analgesic, antispasmodic. Suppresses secretion of skin and mucous membranes; antagonistic to Morphine. Externally applied to relieve pain, to restrain secretion of milk and for its effect on the eye. Internally used in night sweats and incon tinence of urine, in febrile conditions, as an adjuvant with laxatives, etc. Dose, 0.03 to 0.13 Grm. (% to 2 grs. )or more. BLACK ALDER
   The bark of ILBX VERTICILLATA ( L.) Gray. Astringent, bitter tonic, alterative, antiperiodic. Serviceable in cutaneous diseases, in diarrhea and all debilitated conditions; in dyspepsia combined with Golden-seal.⁴

BURDOCK (Lappa)^ARCTI
   The root. also the seeds of ARCTIUM LAPPA. Lin. Tonic. altera tive, aperient, diuretic. Used like Sarsaparilla in cutaneous, stru mous and syphilitic affections.⁴

CAMPHOR^DRYOB
   A stearopten obtained from CINNAMOMUM CAMP:-roRA, F. Nees & Eber. Stimulates the nervous and vascular systems: antispasmo dic, anaphrodisiac. Prescribed in acute coryza, in diarrhea, in some spasmodic affections, and to allay maniacal and sexual excitement. Dose, 0.06 to0.3 Grm. (1 to 5 grs.); in low fevers and in mania 0.6 to 1.3 Grm. (10 to 20 grs.) may be given.⁴

ASTHMA
   For... / ...immediate relief, the smoke from mixtures of stramonium or henbane leaves with nitre and a little extract of opium, or from nitre paper or tobacco; belladonna or henbane, lobelia, morphine (used with due caution); in selected cases, amyl nitrite or nitroglyce rin. Sometimes strong coffee will reliev... / ...from gastric irrita tion, trea cause. In any case consider question of a change of residence.⁴

BOILS
   To abort, paint the part with a solution of silver nitrate, 20 to 40 grs. to fl. oz. or apply... / ...horated oil or inject a few drops of a 5% solution of carbolic acid. If these fail, apply Glycero plasma or a flaxseed meal poultice, with opium or belladonna to re lieve pain. Internally, sulphurated lime to prevent suppuration and appropriate tonic and restorative remedies. When suppuration occurs...⁴

BRONCHITIS
   ...on of patient. As expectorants use ammonium chloride, ammonium carbonate, lobelia, senega, etc., combining these with henbane, heroine or codeine to allay excessive cough. As case progresses, use terpin hydrate or terebene, oil oi sandalwood, eucalyptol and similar remedies. Eucalyptol in spray or b......alyptol and similar remedies. Eucalyptol in spray or by inhalation is very eflicient. When there is hypersecretion, avoid ammonium chloride and use belladonna, strychnine and counter-irritation.⁴

CALCULI. RENAL OR VESICAL
   Pain, (renal colic) must be treated with chlorodyne, belladonna in full doses, morphine and atropine hypodermatically, cautious in hzilations of chloroform. Remedies depend on nature of the calculus.⁴

CHOLERA, ASIATIC
   As prophylactic measures, avoid all uncooked foods, especiaHy water that has not been boiled; sulphuric... / ...e pain, chlorodyne; morphine only in urgent cases. An old plan of treatment which was very successful was with heroic doses of calomel. In stage of collapse stimulants and hot baths or hot water bed; strychnine and atropine hypodermatically; subcutaneous injection of normal salt solution.⁴

CHORDEE
   Internally, potassium bromide and chloral; lupulin; a combina tion of camphor, henbane and opium; suppositories of belladonna. Locally, application of hot water; belladonna ointment over corpus spongiosum.⁴

COLLAPSE
   The most important remedies are Elixir D igitalin Compound, N., B. & Co. and atropine hypodermatically. Subcutaneous injection of saline solution; ether. digitalis, alcohol are remedies of value. See Shock.⁴

CONJUNCTIVITIS
   In simple acute Conjunctivitis, boric acid, 10 grs. to the oz.’ in camphor water, or sodium borate of similar strength; silver... / ... mercuric chloride 1l8000, formaldehyd, 13000) with leeches to temples for in flammation; silver nitrate, 15 grs. to fl. oz.; Iodosyl in powder; instilla tions of atropine solution with use of Iodosyl if ulcerations of cornea occur.⁴

CONSTIPATION
   Medicate no more than is necessary. CROUP, SPASMODIC
   During attack, patient may be placed in a hot bath, the atmosphere of the room being kept saturated with steam; as remedies, antimonial wine, a combination of chloral with bromides and bella donna, amyl nitrite, relaxants. Between attacks, general roborant treatment, pure air, avoidance of causes of irritation, bromides to diminish susceptibility.⁴

CYSTITIS

DIABETES INSIPIDUS
   If dependent on vaso-motor relaxation, ergot, extract suprarenal glands; astringents, particularly gallic acid and rhus aromatica. If due to nervous irritability, belladonna, nervines, bromides. Tonics are generally indicated, particularly iron and strychnine.⁴

EPIDIDYMITIS
   Use antipyretic and anodyne remedies as indicated. Apply locally an ointment of guaiacol or a solution of silver nitrate. Keep patient in bed if possible, with pelvis elevated, or else keep the part at rest by an appropriate dressing. After acute symptoms have sub sided treat resulting induration with mercurial and belladonna ointments or with lanolin, giving iodides internally.⁴

EPILEPSY
   During the seizure, amyl nitrite is the remedy most likely to be of service; chloroform must be... / ...y than potassium bromide. In syphilitic cases potassium iodide in full doses must be used instead of the bromide. Other remedies of im portance are belladonna (combined with bromides), cannabis indica, digitalis, horse-nettle and chloral hydrate. In children, ascertain whether the irritation is due ...⁴

EPISTAXIS
   In severe cases, surgical measures must be resorted to (plugging anterior and... / ...ior nares).
