Physician's Materia Medica on Thyol
ICHTHYOL (Ammonium lchthyolsulphonate)
A tarry product obtained by destructive distillation from certain bituminous rocks in the Tyrol. Used internally and externally in obstinate skin diseases, in rheumatism and erysipelas and as an antiseptic dressing for ulcers and sprains. Dose, for internal use, 0.06 to 0.30 Grm. (1 to 5 grs.).1

CHILBLAINS
Useful remedies are; ointment of iodine, half strength; ointment of ichthyol, 20%, combined perhaps with tannin or resorcin or balsam Peru; tincture capsicum; carbolated ointment; resin cerate.1

Improve general health of patient by hygienic measures. See that the diet is simple and substantial. Fats, salted meats, pastry and all indigestible... / ...s, apply zinc ointment or zinc oxide or oleate as a dusting powder. Later, use more stimulating remedies—ointments of tar, resorcin, green soap, ichthyol, salicylic acid or oil of cade.1

Antistreptococclc serum.1

FELON
In forming stage, apply a solution of silver nitrate (80 grs to fl. oz.), citrine ointment or compound solution of iodine to abort; Glyceroplas ma, ichthyol ointment or a poultice made of bread crumb with solu tion lead subacetate. Anod ynes and local anesthetics are often necessary.1

GANGRENE
Bromine is the most e lcient escharotic; chromic acid and nitric acid are often used. Carbolic acid applied in full strength, followed by alcohol to limit its action, with subsequent dressing with Iodosyl has given excellent results. For cleansing, hydrogen peroxide is eflicient. Ichthyol and boric acid may be used in dressing, but Iodosyl is better. Internally guaiacol and creosote to guard against p yemia.1

Solution of boric acid, 20 grs. to fl. oz., applied to nipple after nursing; glycerite of tannin; silver nitrate carefully applied; solu tion of cocaine, (4 grs. to fl. oz.) just before nursing when very painful (to be carefully washed off, of course, before the child is put to the breast); ichthyol ointment; cacao butter.1

In absence of local cause, general Pruritus calls for tonic treat ment, particularly for use of arsenic. Give attention to stomach, bowels and kidneys.' The local remedies that give most relief are lotions of borax or of sodium bicarbonate or hyposulphite to which carbolic acid may be advantageously added (one or two drachms to the pint). Menthol. resorcin, thymol. boric acid and ichthyol are also useful. Alkal Antiseptine, diluted with from four to eight parts of water is an excellent remedy.1

In anemic eases, syrup iodide ofiron, Hamno-M;1ngan with Arsenic, N., B. & C0,; for enlarged glands, ointments of iodine, Iodosyl or ichthyol and internally iodine compounds, especially Creosotide, N., B. 8: Co.; if suppuration threatens, sulphurated lime.1
