Physician's Materia Medica on Ze-an

ZE-AN
   Aconcentrated preparation of CORN SILK, q. v. An efficient lenitive diuretic stimulating the renal secretion without causing - local congestion or irritation. A valuable remedy in catarrhal in flammation of the bladder and in all cases where there is irritation of the genito-urinary tract. Ordinary adult dose 4 c. c. (a fluidrachm), representing about one ounce of fresh corn silk.1

ZE-AN, LITHIATED
   Each fluidrachm contains the active constituents of one ounce of fresh corn silk together with Lithium Benzoate, 1 1/2 grs. and Lithium Salicylate, 1 1/2 grs. It is especially useful in cases where uric acid is present in the system in excess. Dose, 4 c. c. (a fluidrachm).1

CYSTITIS
   In Acute Cystitis, aconite and spirit of nitrous ether, supposi tories (or hot rectal... / ...r bladder. Avoid highly seasoned foods and remedies which may irritate the bladder. If urine becomes purulent, salol is useful. In Subacute Cystitis, Ze-an (which is also ad misible even in acute attacks as a lenitive diuretic), buchu, uva ursi, Elixir Saw Palmetto and Sandalwood. GLEET
   Iodosyl Pencils; astringent and antiseptic injections or irrigation (silver nitrate, mercuric chloride, zinc sulphate, carbolic acid. potassium permanganate, bismuth subnitrate); internally, methylere blue, sandalwood oil, etc.; Ze-an. Treat stricture by dilatation.1

GONORRHEA
   Free irrigation twice a day with a hot solution of potassium per manganate (1 grain increased gradually to 3 grs. to the pint); Iodosyl Pencils, with internal use of Ze-an; injections of silver nitrate or protargol, zinc acetate, mercuric chloride. Internally copaiba, oil sandalwood, cubeb. Treatment for acute gonorrhea should be con tinued until gonococci have completely disappeared.1

INCONTINENCE OF URINE
   In the nocturnal incontinence of children, remove first any source of reflex irritation, such as worms or long prepuce or excessive acidity or alkalinity of urine. Belladonna, nux vomica, ergot, rhus aroma tica, tincture ferric chloride are among the remedies found service able. Nervous incontinence in adults is best treated with can tharides (one drop of the tincture three times a day) combined with lithiated Ze-an.1

LITHEMIA
   To eliminate uric acid use Lithiated Ze-an. The patient should drink much water.1

NEPHRITIS, ACUTE
   Prescribe at first aconite, calomel and sodium bicarbonate fol lowed by a saline cathartic; warm mucilaginous drinks, potassium citrate and Ze-an; Glyceroplasma over loins. If uremia is threaten ed, elaterium, Tonic Pilocarpine Compound, hot air baths to cause sweating. In later stages digitalis and squill, caffeine, compound spirit juniper, even cantharides in small doses.1

PROSTATITIS
   General treatment for Inflammation, q. v. To relieve vesical tenesmus and pain, rectal suppositories of opium and henbane; Ze-an as diuretic, with which may be combined potassium citrate. In chronic cases, local treatment by steel sounds or application of suit able medicaments.1

SCARLATINA
   Some physicians prescribe as a specific remedy sodium salicylate (2 gr. doses every hour),... / ...rs. every 2 to 4 hours). The usual treatment is by diaphoretic and diuretic refrigerants. potassium citrate with spirit nitrous ether, vichy water or Ze-an, N., B. & Co., with potassium acetate.
