Carbon

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a gas that has no odor or color. But it is very dangerous. It can cause sudden illness and death. CO is found in combustion fumes, such as those made by cars and trucks, lanterns, stoves, gas ranges and heating systems. CO from these fumes can build up in places that don't have a good flow of fresh air. You can be poisoned by breathing them in. The most common symptoms of CO poisoning are:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Chest pain
  • Confusion

It is often hard to tell if someone has CO poisoning, because the symptoms may be like those of other illnesses. People who are sleeping or intoxicated can die from CO poisoning before they have symptoms. A CO detector can warn you if you have high levels of CO in your home.

ACETANILID COMPOUND
Acetanilid Compound. Special, N., B. & Co. is a combination of Acetanilid, 8 parts; Caffeine, 1 part. and Sodium Bicarbonate, 1 part. Acetanilid Compound, Modified, N., B. & Co., consists of Acetanilid, 70 parts; Caffeine Citrated, 10 parts; Sodium Bicarbon ate, 18 parts, and Sodium Bromide, 2 parts. Usual dose of either of these is 0.2 to 0.3 Grm. (3 to 5 grs.), repeated in two hours if needed.3

AMMONIA
The medicinal preparation (Water of Ammonia) is a solution in water of the gas, Ammonia. Powerful irritant, rubefacient; much used in stimulating liniments, which should never be confined under an impervious covering unless blistering is desired. Internally a powerful stimulant, the effect passing off, however, quickly. It is antacid, but the carbonate is to be preferred for this use. Dilute solutions give relief for insect stings. Dose, 0.06 to 1.0 c. c. (1 to 15 m), highly diluted.3

AMMONIUM CARBONATE
An active cardiac and general stimulant; antacid. Valuable in adynamic fevers, in capillary bronchitis and in some forms of dyspep sia. Dose, as expectorant, 0.13 to 0.20 Grm. (2 to 3 grs.); as stimulant 0.3 to0.6 Grm. (5 to 10 grs.), repeated every hour.3

B!SMUTH
The compounds of Bismuth, although non-poisonous, have a marked antiseptic action which renders them valuable in medicine. They are used chiefly for their effect upon the mucous membrane of the stomach, having a soothing action when irritation of the mem brane exists. The insoluble compounds (subnitrate, snbcarbonate) have a similar action when applied topically to ulcerated surfaces or to the urethral or rectal mucous membrane. a. Bismuth and Ammonium Citrate. Beingsolubie, has greater astringe3

CALCIUM CARBONATE
In two forms, Prepared Chalk and Calcium Carbonate, Precipi tated. Antacid with an astringent action. Prescribed in diarrhr-as especially of children, in dyspepsia with acid stomach, etc. Dose, 0.6 to 2.5 Grm. (10 to 40 grs.).3

GUAIACOL
The principal constituent of BEecHwooD csEosorE. Antiseptic, antipyretic, local anodyne. Prescribed in tubercular diseases, car buncle, lupus, etc. Dose, 0.13 to 1.0 c. c. (2 to 15 Ill), administered in capsules or in milk. Guaiacol Carbonate is an insoluble crystalline powder which is nearly tasteless. Dose, 0.3 to 2.0 Grm. (5 to 30 grs.), three times-a day.3

LEAD CARBONATE
Used in ointments for dressing burns, scalds, etc.3

LITHIUM
The compounds of LITHIUM are used in medicine in preference to corresponding salts of other allgaline bases because the atomic weight of the element is much lower than that of any other metal, nence the dose required is smaller to produce the same effects, when that is due to the acid constituent (e. g. lithium bromide, lithium salicylate). Lithium further forms with uric acid soluble salts, hence the carbonate and compounds like the citrate which are converted into carbonate in the system, are 3

MAGNESIUM
The salts of MAGNEsIUM have a pronounced cathartic action which gives them their distinguishing character. a. Magnesia. Calcined. Antacid, laxative, anti-lithic. Much used for relief of acidity of the stomach. its laxative property giving it preference over other antacids. Often combined with Rhubarb. Dose, 0.3 to 2.0 Grm. (5 to 30 grs.). b. Magnesium Acetate. Less disagreeable in taste than the sulphate. Dose, 2 to 8 Grm. (30 to 120 grs.) and upwards. c. Magnesium Carbonate. Antacid. laxative, 3

MANGANESE
The compounds of MANGANEsE are often given in conjunction with those of iron as hematinic tonics. Some of them are reported to have a specific action as emmenagogues. a. Manganese Bromide. Dose. 0.06 to 0.30 Grm. (1 to 5 grs.). For formula see under Gold Bromide. b. Manganese Carbonate. Hematinic tonic, emmena gogue. Dose, 0.06 to 0.20 Grm. (1 to 3 grs.). c. Manganese Dioxide. Hematinic tonic, emmenagogue, alterative. Used in chlorosis, amenorrhea and in some forms of gastralgia. Dose, 0.06 to 03

BITES AND STINGS OF INSECTS
Alkaline lotions give relief; use a weak solution of ammonia. Alkal-amiseptine, diluted with an equal volume of water, sodium bicarbonate (10 grs. to the 11. oz.), sodium borate (10 to 20 grs. to fl oz.); carbolated oil or ointment also has a soothing effect.3

BROMIDROSIS
Sponge daily with solution of borax containing a little ammonia or sodium bicarbonate to cleanse; follow with antiseptine or other local antiseptic. As dusting powder use zinc oleate with boric acid, or talcum powder with boric and benzoic or salicylic acids.3

When consolidation has begun, pyrexia is to be combat ed by cold sponging, while the action... / ...be expecto rants to aid in clearing the lungs, ammonium chloride being the most important, to be combined sometimes with the more stimulant am monium carbonate.3

PRURITUS
In absence of local cause, general Pruritus calls for tonic treat ment, particularly for use of arsenic. Give attention to stomach, bowels and kidneys.' The local remedies that give most relief are lotions of borax or of sodium bicarbonate or hyposulphite to which carbolic acid may be advantageously added (one or two drachms to the pint). Menthol. resorcin, thymol. boric acid and ichthyol are also useful. Alkal Antiseptine, diluted with from four to eight parts of water is an excellent remedy.3
