All packaged foods and beverages in the U.S. have food labels. These "Nutrition Facts" labels can help you make smarter food choices and eat a healthy diet.

Before you read the food label, you should know a few things:

  • Serving size is based on how much people usually eat and drink at one time
  • Number of servings tells you how many servings are in the container. Some labels will give you information about calories and nutrients for both the whole package and each serving size. But many labels just tell you that information for each serving size. You need to think about the serving size when you decide how much to eat or drink. For example, if a bottle of juice has two servings and you drink the whole bottle, then you are getting twice the amount of sugar that is listed on the label.
  • Percent daily value (%DV) is a number that helps you understand how much of a nutrient is in one serving. Experts recommend that you get certain amount of different nutrients daily. %DV tells you what percentage of the daily recommendation you get from one serving of a food. With this, you can figure out if a food is high or low in a nutrient: 5% or less is low, 20% or more is high.

The information on a food label can help you see how a certain food or drink fits into your overall diet. The label lists, per serving,:

  • The number of calories
  • Fats, including total fat, saturated fat, and trans fat
  • Cholesterol
  • Sodium
  • Carbohydrates, including fiber, total sugar, and added sugar
  • Protein
  • Vitamins and Minerals

ACETANILID (Phenylacetamide; Antifebrin.)
Analgesic, antipyretic, antiseptic; a powerful depressant to the spinal nerve centers. Used especially in neuralgic and rheumatic affections to control pain. in migraine, in febrile conditions accom panied with pain. in delirium tremens, in insomnia and as a remedy for obstinate vomiting. Externally it is useful as a surgical dress ing, resembling iodoform in its action. Incompatible with bromides and iodides and with spirit of nitrous ether. It is advantageously combined with Caffeine which dim2

ANTIPYRIN (Phenazone)
Chemical name Phenyldimethylpyrazolon. Antipyretic, anal gesic, locally hemostatic. Used chiefly for relief of pain of a non-in fiammatory character, as in neuralgic affections and in locomotor ataxia. It often gives relief in whooping cough, and is a valuable remedy in epilepsy. Locally it is used with advantage in acute coryza and in hemorrhoids, associated generally with cocaine. Dose. 0.2 to 0.3 Grm. (3 to 5 grs.), which may be increased if the remedy is well borne.2

BERBERINE (Hydrastin)
Alkaloid from GOLDEN-SEAL and some other related plants. Bit ter tonic, hepatic stimulant, antiperiodic. The Hydrochloride is the salt most used. The sulphate and phosphate have' identical proper ties, and have the advantage of being more soluble. Dose of either, 0.06 to 0.25 Grm. (1 to 4 grs.).2

DOVER POWDER (Powder of Ipecac and Opium)
A combination of IPECAC with OPIUM, remarkably for its dia phoretic efficiency. It is of great value in the early stage of acute inflammatory affections such as coryza, bronchitis, pleurisy and especially in muscular rheumatism. It may be advantageously com bined with camphor and with quinine hydrobnomide. The formula of the oflicial preparation (Powder of Ipecac and Opium) is; Ipecac, 1 part; Powdered Opium, 1 part; Sugar of Milk 8 parts. Dose, 0.13 to 0.65 Grm. (2 to 10 grs.). See Tully Powder2

FORMAL-ANTISEPTINE
A non-toxic. non-irritant antiseptic and germicide having the general properties of Antiseptine, q. v. Its chief active constituents are Formaldehyd. Eucalyptol and Boric and Benzoic Acids. It has no advantage over Antiseptine, unless it be possibly in its use as an in testinal antiseptic. Dose, 4 c. c. (one fluidrachm), three to five times daily.2

HAEMO-MANGAN
A ferruginous tonic, each fluidrachm containing; Iron Citro peptonate, 1% grs.; ManganeseCitropeptonate, 1/4 gr. The preparation resembles dialysed iron in its freedom from astringency and acidity, but it has the advantage over that preparation in the fact that the iron is presented in the form of an organic compound which is readily assimilable. Clinical experience declares it a most eflicient agent in all conditions in which a blood-euriching tonic is indicated. Dose, 4 c. c. (1 fluidrachm) a2

IODOFORM
Alterative, antiseptic, local anodyne. Not now much used inter nally except occasionally for its anodyne effect. PILOCARPINE
Alkaloid obtained from the leaves of various species of PILOCARPUS, and representing their medicinal activity. see Jaborandi. The alkaloid may be used to advantage in all cases where jaborandi is beneficial, and has besides in a remarkable degree the power of con tracting the pupil of the eye when applied locally. Solutions contain ing 1 to 4 grains to the fluidounce of the hydrochloride are much used by ophthalmologists for their myotic effect and to relieve intraocular tension, Dose, 0.001 to 2
