IODOFORM
Alterative, antiseptic, local anodyne. Not now much used inter nally except occasionally for its anodyne effect. Largely employed in surgery, but is being superseded by Iodosyl, q. v., which has the great advantage over Iodoform that it has no objectionable odor. Dose, 0.06 to 0.30 Grm. (1 to 5 grs.).1

Keep parts clean by frequent bathing in pure water; to disinfect use solution boric acid, 1%; silver nitrate, 2 gr. to fl. o2.; Iodosyl oint ment, 6% ; carbolic acid, 1.5%; potassium permanganate, 1 gr. to fl, oz. If there is active inflammation apply lotion of lead water. For dust ing powder zinc oleate, Iodosyl or zinc oxide.1

When threatened, harden skin by frequent use of astringent lotions, lead water, tannin dissolved in dilute alcohol, 2 grs. to fl. oz.; whiskey and salt (2 drachms to pint); Antiseptine diluted with wa ter or whiskey. When ulcers have formal, protect with soap plaster and use antiseptics. especially Iodosyl ointment. Sustain patient’s strength with nourishing and predigested food. Iron in form of the tincture is generally of service.1

Remove crusts by careful use of a solution of sodium borate (8 grs. to fl. oz.), then apply Iodosyl ointment (6 per cent.) or a dilute oint ment of yellow oxide of mercury (1 gr. to drm.) or an ointment con taining in each drachm 2 grs. of precipitated sulphur and 1.5 grs. of resorcin. For accompanying conjunctivitis, eye drops containing boric acid or sodium borate. Correct refractive errors if present.1

Carbolic acid applied in full strength, followed by alcohol to limit its action, with subsequent dressing with Iodosyl has given excellent results. For cleansing, hydrogen peroxide is eflicient. Ichthyol and boric acid may be used in dressing, but Iodosyl is better. Internally guaiacol and creosote to guard against p yemia.1

Internally copaiba, oil sandalwood, cubeb. Treatment for acute gonorrhea should be con tinued until gonococci have completely disappeared.1
