   Peppermint (Mentha piperita) or Cornmint (Mentha arvensis) can be used as a topical treatment for rashes or hives. Both contain menthol (anesthetic and anti-inflammatory) and rosmarinic acid (anti-inflammatory).

APOMORPHINE
   Derivative alkaloid from MORPHINE. Expectorant or emetic ac cording to the dose. Small doses act as a sedative in delirium tre mens.' As an expectorant 0.001 to 0.0025 Grm. (1-60 to 1-25 gr.) may be given; as an emetic 0.06 (1-10 gr.) usually suflices (always given for this purpose hypodermatically).3

BAMBOO BRIER COMPOUND
   A combination of vegetable alteratives widely used in the treat ment of syphilitic affections, and havim; the high endorsement of Dr. J. Marion Sims. It consists of; Smilax Sarsaparilla, 4 parts; Stil lingia sylvatica, 4 parts; Lappa minor, 4 parts; Phytolacca decandra, 4 parts; Xanthoxylum Carolinianum, 1 part.3

BERBERINE (Hydrastin)
   Alkaloid from GOLDEN-SEAL and some other related plants. Bit ter tonic, hepatic stimulant, antiperiodic. The Hydrochloride is the salt most used. The sulphate and phosphate have' identical proper ties, and have the advantage of being more soluble. Dose of either, 0.06 to 0.25 Grm. (1 to 4 grs.).3

BUCKTHORN BARK (Frangula)
   The bark of RHAMNUs FRANGULA, Lin. A mild laxative, es pecially suitable for children and for persons subject to hemorrhoids. Practically superseded by Cascara Sagrada, q. v.3

BUCKTHORN BERRIES
   The fruit of RHAMNUs CATHARTICA, Lin. Hydragogue cathar tic, liable to be harsh in operation. Should be combined with car minatives. Used in dropsy, rheumatism and gout.3

CLOVES
   The flower buds of EUGENIA AROMATICA, (L.) 0. Kze. Carmina tive, stomachic; locally applied, counter-irritant. analgesic. The active constituent is the oflicial volatile oil, much used for relief of toothache.3

IGNATlA
   The seeds of STRYCHNOS IGNATII, Lindl. Properties identical with those of Nux Vonlica, q. v. Dose, 0.06 to 0.30 Grm. (1 to 5 grs.).3

LIVERWORTRIEL
   The leaves of ANEMONE HEPATICA, Lin. A mild demulcent tonic; diuretic, deobstruent. expectorant, mildly astringent.3

NETTLEURTIC
   The root of URTICA DIOICA, Lin. Diuretic, antiscorbutic, hemo. static.3

NUTMEGMYRIS
   Kernel of the seed of MYRISTICA FRAGRANS, Houtt. Aromatic, carminative; distinctly narcotic. Chiefly used for flavoring. Active constituent the official volatile oil.3

ABORTION
   Habitual abortion may be due to syphilis, to endo-metritis or uterine displacement. to undue... / ...or other Uterine Sedative; avoid large doses of quinine. - If abortion seems imminent, keep the patient at rest and give an opiate (morphine hypodermatically or opium extract by injection or suppository). If these measures fail, an aseptic tampon must be introduced and fluid extract of ergot must be...3

ANGINA PECTORIS
   In intervals between attacks, prescribe a simple but nourishing diet with avoidance of all forms... / ... exertion; cardiac tonics, arsenic or as an alterative phosphorus. During at tack, amyl nitrite by inhalation, nitroglycerin in solution or hypoder matically; for more prolonged action, sodium nitrite. CALCULI. RENAL OR VESICAL
   Pain, (renal colic) must be treated with chlorodyne, belladonna in full doses, morphine and atropine hypodermatically, cautious in hzilations of chloroform. Remedies depend on nature of the calculus.3

CHOLERA, ASIATIC
   As prophylactic measures, avoid all uncooked foods, especiaHy water that has not been boiled; sulphuric acid lemonade. In early stage, camphor,... / ...as very successful was with heroic doses of calomel. In stage of collapse stimulants and hot baths or hot water bed; strychnine and atropine hypodermatically; subcutaneous injection of normal salt solution.3

COLLAPSE
   The most important remedies are Elixir D igitalin Compound, N., B. & Co. and atropine hypodermatically. Subcutaneous injection of saline solution; ether. digitalis, alcohol are remedies of value. See Shock.3

DIABETES INSIPIDUS
   If dependent on vaso-motor relaxation, ergot, extract suprarenal glands; astringents, particularly gallic acid and rhus aromatica. If due to nervous irritability, belladonna, nervines, bromides. Tonics are generally indicated, particularly iron and strychnine.3

GOUT
   In acute attacks prescribe colchicum, pushing the remedy to its full effect; morphine hypodermatically for pain; abundance of... / In acute attacks prescribe colchicum, pushing the remedy to its full effect; morphine hypodermatically for pain; abundance of water, particularly lithia water; potassium iodide; local application of alka line lotions, tincture iodine or oil pepp... / ...of water.3

INCONTINENCE OF URINE
   In the nocturnal incontinence of children, remove first any source of reflex irritation, such as worms or long prepuce or excessive acidity or alkalinity of urine. Belladonna, nux vomica, ergot, rhus aroma tica, tincture ferric chloride are among the remedies found service able. Nervous incontinence in adults is best treated with can tharides (one drop of the tincture three times a day) combined with lithiated Ze-an.3

PERTUSSIS
   Of the numerous remedies prescribed in whooping cough, those which have given best satisfaction are; Bromoform (conveniently... / ...f course in abscence of the patient) once a day with burning sulphur or with formaldehyde vapor is the most effective remedy, although not always practicable. In severe paroxysms, a little chloroform or amyl nitrite by inhalation gives relief.3

PNEUMONIA (Croupous.)
   Only at the very outset are arterial sedatives useful, veratrum being best. When consolidation... / ...forced if necessary by digitalis and alcoholic stimulants. Elixir Digitalin Compound, N., B. & Co., is often useful. Strychnine and atropine hypodermatically are important remedies if cyanosis is extreme; in halations of oxygen are also of great value in such cases. Combat untoward symptoms as they ...3

RACHITIS
   The disease is one of non-assimilation, the remedies, 1st general tonics and nutrients; cod liver oil. quinine, copper arsenite, syrup ferrous iodide, Haemo-Mangan; 2d Bone lood; phosphorus. glycero phosphates, hypophosphites, lacto-phosphates, Eupeptic Hypophos phites, N., B. & Co. Thyroid extract and suprarenal extract have given good results. Improve hygienic condition of patient and prescribe massage and passive exercise when this is practicable.3

SCIATICA
   General treatment for neuralgia. Hypodermatic iniections of atropine in heroic doses (1-20 grain) is highly recommended by some to cut short the attack. Others advise acupuncture or local massage or the ether spray, applied daily, or the hypodermatic use of morphine or of chloroform. In any case the hot water bottle and liniments of chloroform, aconite, methyl salicylate and menthol are remedies of value.3

TETANUS
   Tetanus antitoxin should be administered at once, and convul sions combated by inhalations of chloroform or by chloral combined with potassium bromide (see Bromanodyne, Part I). Other remedies are cocaine or a combination of this with morphine and atropine, hypodermatically; Fowler’s solution; calabar bean; pilocarpine (the last to eliminate the toxin).3
