EUONYMUS
   The bark of the root of Euonymus atropurpureus, Jacquin (Nat. Ord. Celastraceae.). A small shrub or bush of the United States. Dose, 5 to 60... / ...ing Bush, Spindle Tree. Principal Constituents.—A bitter glucoside euonymin, closely resembling digitalin; asparagin, and euonic acid. (Euonymin should not be confounded with the resinoid of the same... / ...value it in so-called chronic ague, and in the constipation and gastric debility associated with or following it. Euonymus is a neglected bitter.1

Physician's Materia Medica on Italin

DIGITALIN (German)
   Glucoside obtained from Foxerglove, q. v. Readily soluble in water and therefore well suited for hypodermatic use. [The French Digitalin is considerably stronger, but is less soluble and is not so uniform a product]. Dose, 0.0006 to 0.03 Grm. (1-100 to 1/2 gr.).2

DIGITALIS (Foxglove)
   The leaves of DIGITALIS PURPUREA, Lin. A powerful cardiac tonic, diminishing the frequency and increasing the force of the heart’s contractions. In large doses dangerously poisonous. Indirectly it acts as a diuretic, and is often prescribed for this purpose in dropsies of cardiac origin. Dose, 0.06 to 0.13 Grm. (1 to 2 grs.). Active principle (in part) Digitalin, q. v.2

ELIXIR DIGITALIN COMPOUND
   Each fluidrachm contains; Digitalin (German), 1-100 gr.; Strych nine Sulphate, 1-50 gr.; Nitroglycerin, 1-100 gr. A most energetic stimulant, very prompt in action, especially useful in the treatment of surgical shock or collapse and in the cardiac depression following fever. The liquid preparation is commonly to be preferred to tab lets, and ought to be in the pocket medicine case of every physician. Ordinary dose 4 c. c. (1 fluidrachm).2

Physician's Therapeutics Memoranda on Italin

AMBLYOPIA
   Ascertain the cause. If due to constitutional taint, use altera tives. notably potassium iodide. If from extreme... / ...ates, strychnine and other tonics, with avoidance of cause; ii lrom tobacco or almhol, ab stain lrom these and use heart tonics, especially Elixir Digitalin Compound, N., B. dz Co.; if from lead poisoning, use potassium iodide; if from rheumatism, antirheumatic remedies.2

ANGINA PECTORIS
   In intervals between attacks, prescribe a simple but nourishing diet with avoidance of all forms... / ...der matically; for more prolonged action, sodium nitrite. If blood pre - sure is not high, in place of the foregoing, alcoholic stimulants, Elixir Digitalin Compound, N., B. & Co. or compound spirit ether. Other remedies of value are antipyrin, injections of morphine and atropine and inhalations of ...2

ASTHMA
   For immediate relief, the smoke from mixtures of stramonium or henbane leaves with nitre and a little... / ...or general treatment, tonics, especially strychnine; grindelia, euphorbia pilulifera; iodides, arsenic; if of cardiac origin, heart tonics, Elixir Digitalin Compound, N., B. & Co.; if arising from gastric irrita tion, trea cause. In any case consider question of a change of residence.2

BURNS AND SCALDS
   For shock, stimulants, especially Elixir Digitalin Compound: hypodermatic injections morphine and atropine. Among the best local remedies are carron oil (linseed oil and lime-water, equal parts, to which may be added 5 per cent. of carbolic acid), solution picric acid (picric acid, 37 grs.; alcohol, 1% fl. ozs.; water, (1. s. to make one pint), creosote water (to relieve pain); in less severe burns, carbolated oil (15 grs. to fl. oz.), Alkal-antiseptine, sodium carbonate in aqueous solution.2

COLLAPSE
   The most important remedies are Elixir D igitalin Compound, N., B. & Co. and atropine hypodermatically. Subcutaneous injection of saline solution; ether. digitalis, alcohol are remedies of value. See Shock.2

PNEUMONIA (Croupous.)
   Only at the very outset are arterial sedatives useful, veratrum being best. When consolidation... / ...yrexia is to be combat ed by cold sponging, while the action of the heart is reinforced if necessary by digitalis and alcoholic stimulants. Elixir Digitalin Compound, N., B. & Co., is often useful. Strychnine and atropine hypodermatically are important remedies if cyanosis is extreme; in halations o... / ...stimulant am monium carbonate.2

SHOCK
   Hypodermatic injection of atropine and digitalin; application of heat by hot water bags, etc.; intravenous injection of sterilized normal salt solution2
