APOMORPHINE
   Derivative alkaloid from MORPHINE. Expectorant or emetic ac cording to the dose. Small doses act as a sedative in delirium tre mens.' As an expectorant 0.001 to 0.0025 Grm. (1-60 to 1-25 gr.) may be given; as an emetic 0.06 (1-10 gr.) usually suflices (always given for this purpose hypodermatically).3

DIGITALIN (German)
   Glucoside obtained from Foxerglove, q. v. Readily soluble in water and therefore well suited for hypodermatic use. [The French Digitalin is considerably stronger, but is less soluble and is not so uniform a product]. Dose, 0.0006 to 0.03 Grm. (1-100 to 1/2 gr.).3

POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE
   A powerful oxidizing agent; locally antiseptic, deodorant and caustic; internally emmenagogue (less eflicient and more irritant than manganese dioxide) and gastric antiseptic; hypodermatically. antidote to venom of snakes, also antidote to morphine. Dose, 0.06 to 0.12 Grm. (1 to 2 grs.).3

THYROID GLAND
   The desiccated gland or an extract from it is used with remark able effects in myxedema. cretinism, scleroderma and excessive obesity and is also said to have given good results in acute mania, melancholia, puerperal and climacteric insanity and other condi tions of mental derangement. Dose of the dried gland (Thyroideum Siccum, B. P.), 0.2 to 0.6 Grm. (3 to 10 grs.).3

ABORTION
   Habitual abortion may be due to syphilis, to endo-metritis or uterine displacement. to undue... / ... BURNS AND SCALDS
   For shock, stimulants, especially Elixir Digitalin Compound: hypodermatic injections morphine and atropine. Among the best local remedies are carron oil (linseed oil and lime-water, equal parts, to which may be added 5 per cent. of carbolic acid), solution picric acid (picric acid, 37 grs.; alcohol, 1% fl. ozs.; water, (1. s. to make one pint), creosote water (to relieve pain); in less severe burns, carbolated oil (15 grs. to fl. oz.), Alkal-antiseptine, sodium carbonate in aqueous solution.3

CALCULI, BILIARY
   Relieve pain by hypodermatic injection of morphine and atropine and by cautious inhalations of chloroform, 20 to 30 minims at a time.    As prophylactic measures, avoid all uncooked foods, especiaHy water that has not been boiled; sulphuric acid lemonade. COLLAPSE

GOUT

SCIATICA
   General treatment for neuralgia. Hypodermatic iniections of atropine in heroic doses (1-20 grain) is highly recommended by some to cut short the attack. Others advise acupuncture or local massage or the ether spray, applied daily, or the hypodermatic use of morphine or of chloroform. In any case the hot water bottle and liniments of chloroform, aconite, methyl salicylate and menthol are remedies of value.3

SHOCK
   Hypodermatic injection of atropine and digitalin; application of heat by hot water bags, etc.; intravenous injection of sterilized normal salt solution3

TETANUS
   Tetanus antitoxin should be administered at once, and convul sions combated by inhalations of chloroform or by chloral combined with potassium bromide (see Bromanodyne, Part I). Other remedies are cocaine or a combination of this with morphine and atropine, hypodermatically; Fowler’s solution; calabar bean; pilocarpine (the last to eliminate the toxin).3
